Pocket-NAV Version 4.4 Available: Version 4.4 fixes the "Crashes and SUA display problems" discussed in the users group. Some users, especially owners of Pocket-PCs, had problems with crashing and some airspace data in the Tim Newport-Peace format was occasionally displayed incorrectly. Another bug that was corrected was in the PalmNav-CE2.exe program. It caused a message stating that there was a security failure when transferring flight log files from the GPS-NAV. The PocketNAV-CE2 version runs on both the Compaq and Casio products. Nomenclature Changes: The Pocket-PC was recently released as the next version of the Palm-PC. Pocket-PCs run the Windows CE Version 3.x operating system, and Palm-PCs run the Windows CE Version 2.x operating system. Compaq Aero 1520s and 1530s were shipped with Windows CE Version 2.x. The Compaq Aero 1550 is shipped with Windows CE Version 3.x. The Pocket-PC is faster than the Palm-PC, but has no real advantages for the Pocket-NAV program. If you are not sure which version you have, look under Start, Settings, System, and General or About. If it says Windows CE Version 2.x use PocketNAV-CE2. Use PocketNAV-CE3 for Windows CE Version 3.x. IMPORTANT: All earlier versions of the software were titled "PalmNav", no matter what version they were. As releases were installed on the Palm-PC the old version was over written by the new version. This release now comes in two "flavors" of the same program and is not titled "PalmNav". Remember, when you load the new version of the Pocket-NAV software, your Palm/Pocket PC will still contain the previous version. To avoid confusion delete the previous version before installing the new version. If it is not deleted and the button is not reassigned to the new version, you may inadvertently start the wrong version. We use the term Pocket-PC generically when there is no difference between the Palm-PC and Pocket-PC. Click here to download V4.4. Update 09/27/01 The present version of the Pocket-NAV software will not run on the new Compaq iPAQ due to the microprocessor it contains. For pilots who are interested in adding the Pocket-NAV to their GPS-NAV we have stock of Compaq 1520s and 1550s. Please see the Prices page of our website for details. Cambridge will support the iPAQ in the future.

If it says Windows CE Version 2.x use PocketNAV-CE2. Use PocketNAV-CE3 for Windows CE Version 3.x. Please Note: A separate version is no longer required for the Casio E series of palm PCs. Download Pocket-NAV Software here: PocketNAV-CE2 V4.4.exe The User's manual is available in the Adobe Acrobat format. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, go to the Manuals page on our website where you will find a link to the Adobe website. There you will find instructions for downloading the Acrobat Reader. Pocket-NAV versus GPS-NAV Display: In response to questions from pilots, the following difference may be noted between the Pocket-NAV and GPS-NAV displays: The Pocket-NAV does not currently support the Pilot Event as it is not in use anywhere in the world, as far as we know, since the Worlds in Germany. Mark thermal is provided by showing tracks on the map, which works much better than marking a point because you can see the drift and search for the thermal along the wind line. Mark waypoint and satellite signal strength are on the Pocket-NAV to-do list, but have not yet been added. Pocket-NAV Standard: When the Pocket-NAV software is used in conjunction with our GPS-NAV (Version 6.0 or later) it becomes the Standard version and will provide the following:
The Standard version does not communicate with the L or S-NAV. This is only available in the Plus version. There is no activation fee for the Pocket-NAV Standard versions. Pocket-NAV Plus: The Plus version will, in addition to the features found in the Standard version, provide the following when connected to a GPS-NAV Version 6.0 and an L-NAV Version 5.8 or S-NAV Version 7.9/8.9:
There is a $375.00 (US) activation fee to enable a GPS-NAV to communicate with Version There is only one version of the Pocket-NAV software. There are two levels of functionality based on the hardware configuration. The table below shows the features available to each:
Compaq 1500 Series Mount System: One of our business tenets is that when customers talk, we listen. The comment heard most often on the flight line was that the Palm-PC was a useful device in the cockpit, but supplying power and finding a mounting system that was secure and easy to position was impossible. Recognizing a need we have designed the Compaq 1500 Series Mount System. It provides an infinite amount of adjustment and incorporates an integral power and data interconnect. By mating the Palm PC to the serial data connector within the mount, you can provide power to the Palm PC via the same secure connection as the data communication. Click here to view a wiring diagram for the Mount System interconnect cable. Compact Flash Card for Pocket-NAV: The Compact Flash Card for the Pocket-PC provides a means for the pilot to not only load the Pocket-NAV Software and SUA files into the Pocket PC, but it is also provides a method to transfer flight logs and nav points without removing the GPS-NAV or the Pocket PC from the cockpit. The Compact Flash Card is shipped with an adaptor that will plug into the PC Card Slot of a laptop computer. At a contest you will be able to simply remove the Compact Flash Card from the Pocket-NAV and submit it to the scoring desk. Want to evaluate your days flight? Just remove the Compact Flash Card, take it home and plug it into your laptop. No more transporting the Flight Recorder back and forth or fussing with com port configurations and cabling. Don't have a laptop computer? Just purchase a Compact Flash Card Reader and connect it to your desktop PC. The Compact Flash Card provides a means to assure that your data is backed-up incase of a problem with the Pocket PC (loss of internal battery power or unexpected hardware failures). The ability to transfer flight logs and nav points is only available in the Pocket-NAV Plus version. Please Note: The Compact Flash card is not a substitute for having Active Sync installed on your computer. Unless your desktop/laptop PC has the ability to read and write to a Compact Flash Card, you need to have Active Sync installed on your computer. Active Sync allows the transfer of files between your Pocket-PC and your desktop/laptop PC. This is needed for such purposes as downloading SUA files and Turnpoint Databases from the internet and transferring them to the Pocket-NAV (if you choose to not use the Compact Flash Card). The Compact Flash Card ships from the factory containing the Pocket-NAV Software, SUA files for your soaring sites (if available), and the manual. Included will be a printed copy of the manual as well as a PC Card Slot adaptor. Most laptop computers have what is called a PC Card slot (originally known as a PCMCIA Card slot). When the Compact Flash card is inserted into the PC Card slot adaptor it will then fit into the laptop computer and will appear as another storage device in Windows Explorer. Many other Pocket-PCs support the Compact Flash Card. The method by which the data is downloaded and stored varies from device to device. Please refer to the manual supplied with your Pocket-PC for specific details regarding Compact Flash Card data transfer.
Please Note: The $375.00 activation fee is actually the cost to license and activate, not the cost of the Software itself. To allow your Pocket-NAV System to utilize the data communicate with your GPS-NAV/L-NAV to the fullest, you must obtain an activation code (license) from us for your Flight Recorder (GPS-NAV). This license is not transferable during the sale of hardware from one person to another. Support: As the World becomes more technological our lives are increasingly influenced by computers. Whether we want to or not, we are forced to use them in our daily lives. This is true of the soaring community as well. With the introduction of the GPS Flight Recorder and the Pocket-NAV System, many pilots are forced to purchase and become familiar with the PC. While it is our intent to provide support for our products, we are finding it increasingly time consuming to provide support with regard to the basics of computer operation. It is the responsibility of the individual user to understand the operating system as well as the peripheral hardware associated with their computer. If you do not understand how Windows works, use the on screen help menus or purchase one of the many after market books on computer operation. Go to Microsoft's website and spend some time reading the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). Open the user's manual that came with your computer and read it. Visit the website of your computer manufacturer. If you are not sure about certain aspects of your computer perhaps some of the websites listed below may be helpful. Still have questions, give us a call. Suggested sites: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/ Microsoft Support Page. If you have specific questions regarding the operation of your Compaq handheld you should contact Compaq Technical Support at . Microsoft has released Version 3.5 of Active Sync. Active Sync is the program that runs on a desktop or laptop PC that allow connection to the Pocket-PC via the serial data cradle. You can download Active Sync 3.5 from the Microsoft website at: http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/pocketpc/downloads/activesync3.5.asp Pocket-NAV Software Compatibility The Cambridge Pocket-NAV System is compatible with the following palm PCs: Compaq Aero We recommend the 1500 (monochrome) series over the 2100 (color) series as the contrast is much greater. The 2100 series does not fit into the 1500 Series Mount. We no longer provide separate interconnect cables for these devices, we only have the 1500 Series Mount available. Due to cabling issues we no longer recommend the Casio devices. Special Use Airspace (SUA) Files We have the EGC2000 Special Use Airspace file for the Pocket-NAV available. Click here to download the luesse00.sua file. Below are listed SUA files for some of the European countries. Cambridge Aero has purchased a license for Hans Trautenberg to make these files available to our Pocket-NAV customers. These files are encrypted and will only run on the Pocket-NAV. If the country you are interested in does not appear, you may find the SUA file by following the SUA website link below. If you do not find it there you may need to write it yourself. Instructions for the creation of SUA files may be found in the Pocket-NAV Users Manual. The Users Manual is available in the Adobe Acrobat .pdf format and is available above or on the Manuals page at no charge. The France 2001 SUA file has been updated on August 4th, 2001 for the Junior Worlds. Austria 2001 John Leibacher has created a site on the acro.harvard.edu server which contains SUA files for various soaring sites around the world. The Pocket-NAV Software utilizes the "Tim Newport-Peace" format. Thank you John. If you do not find an SUA file for your soaring site you may write your own. All you need is a sectional map and a text editing program such as MS Notepad or Word. Also on the acro.harvard.edu server is a page with instructions for creating your own SUA files. The Cambridge Pocket-NAV SystemWas developed in response to the need for a navigational display that would provide a graphic "real-time" display of positional information and navigation points. The Pocket-NAV is a complete system utilizing the L-NAV Final Glide Computer and the GPS-NAV Flight Recorder. The Cambridge Aero Pocket-NAV was first tested at Bavaria-Glide during the Summer of 1998, again at a regional competition in Newcastle, Virginia and in 1999 at the New Zealand Nationals. Some Background: In July, 1998, Cambridge introduced the Pocket-NAV for display of Special Use (restricted) Airspace. It was flown by six pilots at the Bavaria-Glide including the 1997 World Champion, Werner Meuser. Special Use Airspace data was purchased from Hans Trautenberg, the creator of the CAL flight planning program. This prototype system incorporated Cambridge design concepts that were proven valid in a competition environment. Pilot feedback from the European competition is guiding development of a complete system that is integrated with Cambridge GPS flight recorders and glide computers. Beta test units have been flown by our software developer, and two additional pilots at the New Zealand National competition. This second-generation system will be introduced at the US SSA Annual Convention in Knoxville, Tennessee on February 25, 1999. It incorporates new technology plus the wisdom accumulated by Cambridge Aero Instruments from over 15 years of designing advanced gliding instruments. Cambridge Aero would like to remind all of its present and future customers that we stand behind what we sell with a two year warranty. If you need technical support, you can call us here at the factory and speak with someone who can assist you. Please note: Our two year warranty applies to products manufactured by Cambridge Aero Instruments. It does not apply to the palm computers purchased from us for use in the Pocket-NAV system. The warranty period and conditions provided by each manufacturer apply to their specific product. Features: The display for the system is a Windows CE based hand held PC with touch sensitive LCD screen. The hand held PC displays a moving map of restricted airspace, turnpoints and the competition task, including the start line. Details of each map feature are accessible by tapping on the name or number. Zoom and Pan functions are also supported by the touch screen. The Pocket-NAV provides the following:
Moving Map:
Final Glide:
Airspace and Site Information:
Task Entry and Editing:
Start/Finish Gates:
